What You’ll Learn: Kayak Equipment, Safety Procedures & Basic Paddling Techniques
Participants are introduced to kayaks and equipment. By the end of the course, participants will have learned how to use kayaks, paddles, harnesses, and life jackets through simple practical exercises. In addition, participants will be familiar with basic safety procedures and exercises, as well as how to maneuver kayaks effectively.
NB! Here are all the points included in the Basic Course. As mentioned, the Basic Course can be used in the first session of the Beginners’ Course, but it is important that the points are reviewed in more detail and that they are drilled where appropriate during the Basic Course.

The kayak. Footrest, knee support, back support.
Spray skirt. What and why.
Paddle. Grip and twist.
Life jacket. Required. Information must be provided about its use and the different types available.
Helmet. Required. Information must be provided about its use and the different types available.
Other clothing. Information must be provided about clothing in relation to protection when swimming in rivers and in relation to hypothermia.
Line. Information must be provided about what the line is used for and the different types available. -
Sitting position.
Forward stroke.
Sweep stroke.
Paddling backwards.
Low support stroke.
Edging the boat and mastering different strokes with the boat edged.
In and out of backwaters.
Traversing.
Changing direction in the river. -
Exiting a capsized kayak.
Rescuing a companion in a river.
Practical use of a rope.
Swimming in a river.
Scouting a river before paddling.
Use of and requirements for personal equipment in relation to safety equipment that must be available in the group. -
River studies. Theory about the different formations encountered on the river.
